My dogs have kennel cough. Will they keep passing it back and forth?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 40 lbs

Adopted a puppy from shelter, brought home & he started acting lethargic, heavy/labored breathing, sneezing, hacking/coughing, runny nose. my 6yr old dog now has the same symptoms and my puppy seems to be getting a little better. Vets just tell me its nothing. but i assume it's kennel cough. Puppy was on anitibiotics now my adult dog is on them, will they keep passing it back and forth?

They should not pass it back and forth once they have recuperated from this strain of infection kennel cough is caused by a variety of viruses and bacteria. It can take up to 6 weeks to pass. Usually it is an uncomplicated infection. Unfortunately kennel cough is rampant in shelters.

    If its the same strain which I highly suspect it is, the once the 2nd dog is over it, it'll probably be done with for now, as they will both have developed an immunity (at least temporarily) to it. There is a possibility that they could get some other strain down the road or their immunity fades, but its not likely to go back and forth and back and forth. I hope that helps you! Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. It sounds like Tate picked up an infection at doggy daycare and then likely spread it to your roommate's dogs. Some dogs will clear the infection on their own. However, if the coughing persists, they will likely need medication. They will need to see a veterinarian in this case. In the meantime, keep them quiet and at home. They are likely contagious to other dogs. They will not keep passing the infection between them though. Each dog should develop some immunity after being infected. I hope this information helps!

My older dog has kennel cough and we have a 14 week old puppy. We were told to separate t them and the puppy has moved out to another house she has know got a cough can we bring the puppy back to our home as they both have it.
Yes you can! But I would recommend to have them both treated for the respiratory infection as they can pass it back and forth and it can become very frustrating. The puppy might need a different size antibiotic since it is much smaller. Make sure both dogs continue to eat and drink regularly. Upper respiratory can occasionally progress to pneumonia especially in young, elderly, and immunocompromised dogs but they will usually show symptoms of not wanting to eat and being lethargic. I hope they both start to feel better.

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease of dogs characterized by a severe honking cough. It is typically a self-limiting disease, with symptoms resolving in three to four weeks. No, it's not overdoing it. The virus particles can remain viable in the air for up to two weeks. You should not walk those dogs until they are completely cured from kennel cough. Advise your other clients to have their dogs vaccinated against kennel cough.

Dogs are typically "contagious" for the first week or so of illness. To be safe, isolate Luna from other dogs for about two weeks. The cough may linger for longer but is not an indication of active infection.

Poor Lucky! I'm sorry to hear that he's sick. Kennel cough usually runs its course in 7-14 days even without treatment, and the duration of illness is typically quite a bit shorter with antibiotics. So I'm concerned that he's still coughing so much at this point - even without any treatment, he should have gotten over his cough by now. Rarely, kennel cough can progress to a more serious infection such as pneumonia. It's also possible that Lucky has some other medical condition that is contributing to his cough, such as heart disease or chronic bronchitis. I would recommend taking him back to the vet for a recheck since he's still sick - your vet may want to try a different antibiotic, or may recommend some diagnostic testing such as blood work or chest x-rays to get a better idea of what's going on. In the meantime, you can try bringing him into the bathroom with you while you take a hot shower. The steam and humidity often help to break up congestion and may temporarily help h

As long as she is behaving normally and eating/drinking, there is no cause for concern. Kennel cough is self limiting, meaning it will typically resolve on its own in about 2 weeks though the cough may linger. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing or discharge from the mouth or nose. 10 minutes in a steamy bathroom (NOT in the the shower) may help loosen congestion and ease breathing. A humidifier in the room can also help. If the cough is severe, ask your veterinarian bout a cough suppressant. Do not give anything OTC without first speaking with your vet.

Pets can get kennel cough even though they never leave the house. This however would be an unusual presentation for kennel cough because it has lasted for so long. Kennel cough is caused by infectious agents and so just like with any infection, they get sick and then they get better. Something more chronic such as this is more likely related to something like allergies, bronchitis, lung worms or poor air quality. Since it has been going on for so long, I recommend to have the coughing dogs checked out. The doctor may recommend a radiograph to evaluate the lungs and look for any inflammatory processes. Poor girl. Shelter pets often get an upper respiratory infection (Kennel cough) that causes a lot of coughing. I would recommend taking her in to your vet to have her treated with a short course of antibiotics. This should clear things up. Best wishes with your pet and I hope his cough resolves soon!
