My GSD is suddenly afraid of my boyfriend. What should we do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old

Hi there, our gsd is suddenly afraid of my boyfriend. We've both had our dog together as a couple for over 3 years. Last night my boyfriend got down onto the carpet with our dog and was scratching his belly and for whatever reason our dog let out a low growl and got up. I called our dog over to me and now he's acting weird around my boyfriend at all times. It's like our dog only wants my attention and is fearful of my boyfriend. Our gsd has never been abused or anything. What do we do?

Your boyfriend will need to regain Diesel's trust again. He should be the one to feed and water Diesel, take him outside for walks and provide treats/rewards. It may take some time but it can be done. he should talk softly and move slowly when he is around Diesel. You should also praise Diesel when he interacts with your boyfriend. Why he reacted in this manner will likely never be known but scratching/rubbing Diesel's belly shouldn't be done until trust is regained and Diesel offers his abdomen up for rubs.
