Lyme dog on meds, now joint pain & lethargy. Is cold weather to blame?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 26 lbs

Hello. My dog tested positive for Lyme Disease a week ago. He has been on antibiotics since then. He seemed to be feeling better until today. He is lethargic again and seems to be suffering from joint pain. We just had a few inches of snow. Could this be contributing?

We certainly hear reports of dogs with arthritis experiencing difficulty with weather change. In this case, I cannot say that it is not out of the realm of possibility but in a 6 year old dog seems less likely. It is more likely the joint pain is secondary to Lyme disease as it can cause polyarthritis. You need to continue his antibiotics and follow up with your veterinarian to discuss joint taps. Joint taps are a diagnostic test that utilizes a needle to remove fluid from the joint space for evaluation. If we observe inflammation in the joints additional therapy may be needed.
