Why is my dog whining when he has diarrhea? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered

So my dog is whining for no reason. It started yesterday, but today it is much worse. I went for a walk (1 hour) with him, and he was pooped 6 times. The two first times he pooped more than the last 4 times. The last four times it was more like water. He has clearly diarrhea. Is this the reason he is whining? And What helps to dierrhea?

Poor Neo! Yes, this could certainly be the reason that he is whining - dogs with diarrhea often have abdominal cramps and constantly feel like they need to poop, which can be very uncomfortable. If this is the first day he has had this problem, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to give his stomach a chance to settle. Then feed a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days until his poop is back to normal. If this doesn't help, or if he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam since these can be signs of a more serious problem.
