Can I bring cat distemper home on my shoes from a friend's house?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

I was unknowingly in the same apartment of someone who's cat had had cat distemper. Finding out later that her cat had died from the disease. I am worried incase I brought the virus home via my shoes or bare feet. Is there a chance? It wasn't the apartment where the cat lived but a mutual friends apartment we were both visiting. I'm so concerned. Thank you

Given you weren't in the apartment where the cat lived, and if the cat had never visited that apartment, I would not worry about bringing the virus home on your shoes or feet. You are correct that this virus can survive in the environment; in fact, it can survive for up to a year in the environment, but I would only worry about it if you were in the apartment where the cat lived. Should you visit that apartment, be sure to disinfect your shoes before you enter your home.
