My dog's gash is leaking fluid. Should I stop using peroxide?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | 7 years and 8 months old

Hi a few days I wrote about my dogs getting into a fight and my Shepherd getting a gash on her cheek below her eye which by the way is not close to her eye and no worries there. However I have been cleaning it with warm soap and water, peroxide, and putting neosporin on it twice a day and it still seems to b leaking a clear somewhat blood mixed substance that hardens over the fur that is around the wound. What should I do? I did not cut the fur back because I don't think she will let me.

I would not recommend putting peroxide on Lulu's cut. It actually damages the tissue and can prevent wound healing. Just cleaning it once with warm water and antiseptic soap is fine, repeated cleaning will lead interrupting of the healing process. I would leave it be, and monitor it for signs of infection, which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus Should you see any of this signs, I would take Lulu into the vet, as she will need antibiotics to treat the infection.
