Why do I need to bathe my dog before & after fenbendazole for giardia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog is taking fenbendazole for giardia. 5 days of treatment + 30 days of a probiotic. The vet assistant says we have to bathe her before we start the fenbendazole and after we complete the doses. Why?

This is to wash off the giardia eggs which she will reinfect herself by licking and grooming then swallowing them. It is very useful to reduce all possible exposure so clean all feces out of the garden also

That is because there will be cysts from the Giardia in their hair coat. You will want to bath your dog before treatment to get rid of those cysts, and after to remove any that may have been expelled during treatment.
