New shelter dog won't eat after surgery and has fleas. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 44 lbs

My dog has been home from the animal shelter around 36 hours. He was fixed before I took him home. He hasn't eaten any food and I'm really concerned about it. He also hasn't made a bowel movement. To top it all off he has a fleas but because of his recent surgery I can't give him a flea bath. What should I do to get to him to eat and how should I address the fleas while he is still healing?

Even though he can't have a bath you should be able to use a topical or oral flea preventative. Oral medications tend to work more quickly, but don't last as long. I'd recommend tempting him to eat by offering canned food or even plain, boiled chicken breast and white rice. If he still won't eat, vomits, or is straining and posturing but not producing stool I'd recommend taking him to a veterinarian.
