My senior cat is coughing chronically; what's wrong if it's not asthma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

My 12 year old cat is coughing. It is wet and dry and has been going on for several months. She is 5 pounds overweight, and not updated on her shots. I have tried three asthma medicines, but with little results.

Obviously asthma is the most common cause for coughing in cats, i don't know what medicines you tried so i can't comment on that, usually the most effective meds are steroids though (prescription only). it could also be an infection or a tumor, this must be checked by a vet before starting any treatment.
