Why is my dog's mouth still swollen and bleeding after broken teeth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 98 lbs

I have a Great Dane that had 2 broken back teeth (infected) and swelling on his face. Was on pain meds & antibiotics. Now his mouth has swelling & redness on both sides of mouth & drainage (bleeding) Vet has done blood work but all is coming out ok. Was having trouble eating but have been putting broth on his food and is able to eat now, drinking fine. No problem using bathroom either. He is 1 year & 4 months old. What could be causing the redness, swelling and bleeding? Thanks!!

If Oden's broken teeth haven't been removed, then that could be the cause of the redness, swelling, and bleeding. The antibiotics will cure any infection present, but it will not heal the broken teeth. When a tooth is badly broken, it may need to be removed. I'd recommend scheduling a dental with your vet to see if these teeth need to be removed.
