Poor pup! It does sound like he may have been thirsty and a bit nauseous after the car ride, then vomited due to drinking too much water, too fast. Some excessive saliva or drooling at this point is not surprising, since this is usually a sign of nausea - he may still be feeling a bit ill from throwing up. If he is acting normal otherwise, I would suggest picking up his water bowl overnight to give his stomach a chance to settle. In the morning, you can feed him a small meal and offer water again, in small amounts at a time if he seems inclined to drink too much at once. If he has no further issues, then you shouldn't need to worry. If he continues to vomit during the night tonight, or if he is acting lethargic or not wanting to eat tomorrow morning, it would be best to have him examined by a vet since these could be signs of a more serious problem.

Drooling can be a sign of nausea in dogs. You can with hold food and water for the night to let his stomach rest. In the morning, you can try a small amount of boiled chicken and rice as this is gentle on their GI tracts to see how he handles it and if he is interested. IF you notice persistent vomiting tonight, diarrhea (especially bloody), or lethargy, then I would get concerned and take him to an ER clinic tonight If he has no appetite tomorrow then I would get him checked also
