My dog's arthritis is worse. Can I give more Adequan or other meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Can I give my dog a double dose of Adequan - 1 full dose in each hip? Or, should I only give a 1/2 dose in each hip? He seems to have had a major arthritis flare-up. He is taking Boswellia twice a day & 150 mg of Novox (when needed). I'm thinking of increasing the Boswellia, but I don't like giving Novox unless I have to. His arthritis is managed via acupuncture & laser therapy. Thanks!

You really need to consult with your veterinarian about the use of Adequan and the best dose for your dog. If his arthritis is severe than he may need to be given Novox on a daily basis. If you are concerned about possible side effects, try to find the lowest daily dose that still provides relief for him. You could also talk to your vet about adding in Tramadol and/or Gabapentin for more pain relief.

Specific advice on the prescribing and dosage of medications can only be discussed with the vet directly caring for Higdon. It is illegal for us to adjust medications or prescribe drugs for patients we have not seen. Please contact your vet to discuss alterations to his medications and any further options to reduce pain
