Why is my dog's poop dark and hard? Is it blood or constipation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 months and 12 days old | 3.4 lbs

Moki recently has very dark color hard poop. I can't tell if it is dark brown or black. I'm concerned if he is popping blood. It is not wet & shiny like wet tar. Sometimes it is dark brown & sometimes darker. Do poop darken over time if not picked up? I search online some say it have to be tarry to be blood. I did a fecal testing before no parasites. i did it in Petco should I redo it at another place? His energy level seem the same but he is sleeping earlier. I'm trying to give him more water.

It could be that Moki is constipated, and that's why his poop is dark and hard. I would try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. You can also give him a little more exercise, as that can help with constipation. I would take his feces into the vet to have it checked to make sure there is no blood or parasites in it.

Hi there. Yes that is certainly abnormal. If there is blood on the poop it is likely from bleeding happening in his colon. You can try feeding him 1 tablespoon of canned unsweetened pumpkin to soften his stool but if that doesn’t clear things up I would have him seen by your veterinarian to find out why his stool has changed color and why there is blood in it. Best to you and Riley.
