My dog is in pain. Can I give him medicine before the vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old

Dogs mouth excessively dry, constant lip smacking and lip licking. Dog has also seemed uncomfortable, constantly getting up and turning during sleep. Excessive sighing and groaning. We're going to take him to the vet tomorrow, but I kind of feel like he's in pain, which is why he might be sighing so much. Can I give him something for the pain until tomorrow?

It sounds like Pause may be having some stomach upset or pain with the lip smacking you are seeing, and unfortunately over the counter pain medications like aspirin can cause stomach irritation. If you feel he is significantly painful, or if you notice him vomiting or attempting to vomit I'd recommend taking him to an emergency veterinarian tonight.

Unfortunately no, there are no safe OTC pain medications for dogs. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. It does sound like Pause is in pain, and if you are concerned that he is in an excessive amount of pain, I would recommend taking him into an ER vet tonight instead of waiting until the morning.
