My dog has a bump on his head. Could it be an open wound or scab?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 41 lbs

We noticed a bump on the top of our dog’s head yesterday and it felt like it may just have been a scab. We noticed it again this evening and looked more in depth to see what it could be. Per the two pictures I’ve attached, it clearly looks to be a fully open wound of some kind! He allergies have been a bit worse this spring season so not sure if this could at all be attributed to it in some way. Any feedback on what it could be from and how we should best treat it, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for sending in the pictures of Oliver. It is a little difficult for me to make out the pictures, but it appears like he has a small skin growth on his head that has scabbed over. I would gently clean the scab and dried blood away with a warm wash cloth. If there is a flesh colored growth it may be a wart like mass. They are common in many dogs as they age. If he has been scratching at his head, then it could be self trauma secondary to his allergies. If it bothers him or does not resolve, then have your veterinarian evaluate him.
