Why is my puppy stubborn, won't obey commands, and won't recall?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 10 days old | 46 lbs

We used to train our pup every day until she reached 5 months. We stopped because she doesn't care about any snacks or toys. Even meat. She knows all the commands really well, but she just doesn't wanna do them. Is it just her stubborn phase? Also she doesn't recall at all. She looks at you and just walks away and when you go closer she starts to run away. As I said. She doesn't care about any reward. I thought German Shepherd dogs want to please their owners. She is pure bred working line gsd.

Ideally, a dog should work for your praise rather than a treat or toy. The fact that she walks away when you try a recall tells me that you are working her off-lead before she has become reliable on-lead. And when you go after her, it turns into a game of "catch me if you can" for her.If possible, enroll her in a basic obedience class. Do all of her training with her on the leash until she performs well every time. Keep practice sessions short--about ten minutes--but always end on a positive note. If you need more info, you can click on the prompt to initiate a consult. By the way . . . I have Suomenpystykorva, FInland's National Dog! Good luck with your training.
