what do we mean by "external signs"? My french bulldog was supposed to get her period in december it is now March 1st. she is 9 years old. does "external signs" mean bleeding? Should I worry that she hasnt bled? As she got older she was usually almost a month late in her cycle. Not sure if I should worry.

One of the external signs of heat in the dog is bleeding. You may also notice a very swollen vulva and frequent urination. If she is otherwise acting normally, it may be that this heat cycle is just late. But if she is unwell, not eating, lethargic or vomiting, then you need to get her seen by a veterinarian. As she is an older dog, she is at risk for a pyometra (infected uterus), and would need an emergency spay if that were the case. You may want to discuss getting her spayed with your regular vet, before it becomes an emergency situation.
