My dog has recurring face bumps. What can I do until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 53 lbs

My dog has had these “pimples” or “cyst like bumps” on his face the last few months. It clears up and comes back. When I pop them, it is a metallic smelling blood that comes out and little hairs. At first, I thought these were just infected hairs but now after researching , I am thinking bacterial infection. I have an apt set up for him next Saturday, but is there anything I can do for him until then?

Thanks for posting, and great pictures. I agree, this definitely looks consistent with a bacterial infection. When you see your veterinarian Saturday they will confirm and likely prescribe oral and topical medications to help resolve the bumps. In the meantime, I would not pop the bumps. You can clean with an antibacterial wipe such as this one: https://m.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=35138 And you could try switching bowls to stainless steel or ceramic if you are using plastic ones. Good luck with cooper !!
