My dog is licking a lot and has a black spot on his gums. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My labradoodle keeps licking - nothing in particular, sometimes his leg sometimes just licking his chops. It's more frequent than normal and I noticed a black spot on his gums. What could it be?

Some dogs will lick excessively if they are nauseous. If your dog is vomiting or not eating well, this is likely the case. They will also lick or smack their lips if there is a bad taste in their mouth (ie. after giving a medication). Other dogs can lick as a nervous habit. If it persists, I would have your dog evaluated by his veterinarian and to make sure the black spot in the mouth is his normal pigmentation.
