Dog had stroke, improved on steroids. Should we still put him down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 63 lbs

Our dog had a stroke. He wasn't getting better. He is scheduled to be put down in 3 days. He was given steroids to help keep him comfortable. After one dose he has improved greatly. Are they giving us a false sense of hope and just masking the issue? Or should we keep him on them and then see what happens when he is done taking them?

I don't see a reason why not continuing the steroid treatment as long as there is a significant improvement, strokes in dogs often take a few days to a few weeks to show a significant improvement but they usually recover pretty well.
