Could my new puppy get histoplasmosis from our old furniture?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 18 days old | 45 lbs

I recently had to euthanize my German shepherd who had a very bad case of histoplasmosis. No response to treatment. 3 weeks later, after cleaning all the furniture and moving into a new home, I bought a puppy. My husband is worried the fungus could still be contagious from the furniture and infect our new puppy. Is that at all possible? I heard it was contagious, but I figured a few weeks would take care of that.

Histoplasmosis is considered non contagious. Your pet originally got it from infected soil from birds or bat droppings. He had to ingest the disease. Your new puppy will not be exposed to it by your furniture.
