Is it safe for my dog to lick my face or hands? Dominance or germs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 85 lbs

Is it okay to let my dog lick me on the hand and/or cheek? She gets very happy to see me when I've been away for a little while and she wags and wants to give kisses, but I read that you shouldn't let them lick you (besides the germs) because it lets them show too much dominance. Really?

I would be more concerned about the germs than a dominance problem. If she is licking without biting you can allow as much as you want! It’s a good idea to wash your hands or face afterwards, and if you have any health issues check in with your physician.
