Is a shared litter box safe if my cat takes cancer medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 18 years and 5 months old | 6.6 lbs

My cat is taking ‭cancer meds (oncovin), and my concern is the litter. I clean the urine/feces regularly, but what about the rest of the litter? Is it safe for the others to use? I cannot separate the cats I have only one large room. The others will cover his urine/feces but definitely don’t eat it or anything. How much exposure are they getting from the litter box? I know I can only do so much...

I think if you are regularly changing the litter you and your cats will be fine. As long as there is not prolonged exposure to urine and feces there is little risk. To further lower the risk to your other cats make sure you are cleaning out the litter box 1-2 times daily and consider adding an additional box to your home if is feasible. It sounds like you are doing your very best and Chester is lucky to have an owner as dedicated as you are!
