My 15 yr oldChinese Crested Hairless dog has bad glaucoma in one and nearly blind in other eye too. His vet recommended eye removal of the severely damaged eye . His he in pain with this eye? Should we have him put down?? He is somewhat incontinent and bumps into everything, he just wanders around but is still eating ok we hand feed him. Do you think we should do the eye surgery or what?? Thanks so much

Yes the eye could be painful. Most dogs do great after eye removal and he may become perkier afterwards. You are the one that sees him everyday and are the best one to evaluate his quality of life. Personally if he’s eating and getting around I’d do the surgery so he’s more comfortable. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Jingles.

Hello. If you are working with a veterinary ophthalmologist, & this is the best that can be done to control Lucky's glaucoma with medications, & based on your pictures, I would definitely consider removing the eye. Honestly, Lucky will be much happier to have the eye removed because of the pain he is experiencing now. Talk to your veterinarian about the surgery which sounds a lot worse than it really is. We do a lot of these surgeries due to trauma, infection & disease in dogs. Healing is usually fast & trouble free & Lucky will thank you for it.
