My cat has a splinter near her eye. Can I remove it safely at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I have a cat with what seems to be a thin splinter lodged in her face about an inch to the lateral side of her right eye. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, and the only blood I see is a very small amount near the entry point. She let me inspect it, but it didn't want to come out with light effort. Should I just pull harder? I would take her to the veterinarian, but I currently don't have the money. Is there any ointment I can apply that doesn't require a prescription?

You can try to get it out with tweezers. Then I’d clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide and apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If you can’t get it out I would uses a hot compress on the area two or three times a day to increase the blood supply and hopefully that may help loosen it in the skin.
