Why does my dog have a chest lump and won't lie down after surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 165 lbs

My 9 year old pitbull/boxer mix just had surgery a couple weeks ago for a bowel obstruction just past the stomach. Not sure if it's related, but today we noticed a flabby growth from his chest and he won't sit or lay down, there's also a firm mass behind it.

I would bring him in for a recheck right away. This looks like edema or swelling under the skin. It could be related to the surgery, or may be another problem that needs treatment. Having a firm mass behind it worries me also, and he must be uncomfortable if he won’t lay down. Regardless this isn’t normal and a veterinary exam is needed.
