My dog shakes, pants, hides, won't eat after eye ulcer. Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 16 lbs

About 3 weeks ago my dog had an ulcer in his left eye. The vet gave us (one pain medication, one thing of eye drops & one thing of cream) we used it for a week. After our dog started displaying symptoms of withdrawal. For 2 weeks now every night he shakes feriously, pants really hard, hides under beds, and won’t eat. What should we do? Could this still be because of the pain meds? Note: my bf took him home for 2 days & he had 0 signs of withdrawal..but when he came back he’s doing it again

As far as we know dogs do not suffer from withdrawal symptoms from pain killers, however it sounds like your dog is still in pain. Shaking, hiding, panting and not eating are cardinal signs of pain and therefore I suggest you take Cooper back to the vet for a re-exam. Eye injuries as well as ulcers and also glaucoma are very painful and he will need more pain medicine and the eye needs to be re-examined.
