Why is my old dog stepping in his poop? Is he doing it intentionally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

My 14 year old Boston terrier has recently been stepping in his own poop. But I've been keeping the backyard very clean scooping every few days. This is weird because he never used to do this, and I haven't changed a thing. I'm wondering if this is all coincidence? or maybe he's just trying to make me mad.

I can say with certainty that Oliver is not trying to make you mad, so no need to worry about this :) Dogs don't think this way. Since he's 14 years old, my guess would be that he may not see as well as he used to, or may not be quite as coordinated and quick on his feet as he used to be - these are normal aging changes, but can certainly make dogs less aware of where their feet are. If this is happening immediately after he poops, you might be able to help him by calling him to you for a treat as soon as he's finished so that he doesn't linger in the area where the poop is - then go and pick it up right away. You can also keep a washcloth or container of baby wipes by the door for quick clean-up as soon as he comes in, if needed.
