New budgies: normal loud behavior, hand-taming, and settling in?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have 2 new budgies for about 5 days. Randomly, they will start squawking very loud and flying around the cage, often knocking over their perches and food bowls. Is this normal? Also, I put my hand into the cage, as instructed by a bird expert, in order to get them used to my hand. I don't grab them, I just leave my hand still for 5-10 minutes a few times a day. Is this ok? If yes, about how long does it take till they are fully warmed up to the new cage/environment that they are in? Thank you!

The squawking and knocking stuff over is normal, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. It's best to get bowls that can be fixed into position to prevent this. It generally takes them 2-3 weeks to start getting comfortable in a new environment. It's definitely good to interact with them and get close to get them (putting your arm in the cage is good) more familiar with you. Offering treats is always a good way to make friends. Eventually they will come up to your hand and may perch there, but don't be surprised if it takes a month or so. I hope that helps and all is well with your new Budgies.
