My dog is struggling to pee. What are the signs of a dog UTI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 16 lbs

My dog has had decreased appetite, is tired, lack of energy, and I’ve noticed he hasn’t been urinating as much. This morning he wanted to urinate but didn’t. He did this a couple of times. Met vet thinks he had an ulcer because he was vomiting and had very dark stool. But he is no longer vomiting and his stool is still a bit dark but not as much. My concern is hat he may have a UTI. what symptoms would be consistent with a uti?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Symptoms commonly seen with urinary tract infections include urinating in small amounts frequently, painful urination and urinating blood. Please have Barkley evaluated if these are seen. Good luck!
