My old bird is declining. When should I consider euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

Hello my name is Andres, I've had a bird for over 10 years now. About a year ago he was unable to climb up the cage anymore and has spent most of his time at the bottom since. His poop smell has gotten stronger and he is losing his feathers slowly. I can tell he is going through his final stages but I'm unsure about how painful it is for him or if it is just old age. Should I consider euthanasia at this point?

This is a tough question and I’m sorry you are having to consider it. I’m glad you came here to ask for help! When being faced with possible euthanasia I always ask owners to consider the pet’s quality of life. If Birdy seems overall happy, is eating well and continuing to have behaviors that are unique to him (like having interest in a special toy, food, or person) then I would say his quality of life is good. Also consider if he is having more good days than bad. If so, then I would say quality of life is good as well. You may also want to consider having Birdy looked at by your vet. There may be pain medication he can take to help make him more comfortable as well. I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any additional questions!
