Can my dog stop Pexion if also on Phenobarbital for seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 62 lbs

Hi my lurcher has recently had a brain scan and spinal fluids checked, all came back clear. The specialist has now put her on phenobarbital as well as the pexion she was taking already for her seizures. Will she ever be able to stop taking the pexion? Or will she need to stay on both for the rest of her life?

I think many veterinarians would continue with both medications if the seizures were refractory to the first medication, but other times the goal is to try to transition from one anticonvulsant to another for various reasons. I would recommend asking the specialist or your veterinarian (whoever will be managing Jig’s seizures) what the long term plan is.
