My pregnant cat has diarrhea and leaking fluid. Is this labor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 24 days old | 5.5 lbs

Queen’s first litter. First copulation: 12/25/2017. Act’s normal. Does not appear to be having contractions. Kittens still moving inside her. Vulva is unremarkable but she has severe diarrhea. Anus is very irritated, swollen and appears to be partially inside out. Cat person for 40+ years, never seen a queen act this way. 6 nipples prepped, can count at least 4 kittens by feeling belly. Also appears to be leaking urine or fluid as rear end is staying very wet. Very petite (5-6 lbs), male about 9

I am sorry we couldn’t get to your question sooner! I hope Blackie is still doing well. I would recommend that she get checked out by a vet. I would be concerned that the fluid coming out is not urine and instead is amniotic fluid. This could indicate that even though you don’t see her pushing, the kittens are ready to come out. The diarrhea can also be a sign of impending or active labor. You can use washcloths to help her stay clean, and a small amount of ointment like Neosporin to help protect her anus. The vet will need to exam this for a rectal prolapse. A prolapse can occur in animals straining, whether to defecate/have diarrhea or during labor. depending on the severity, it may require surgical correction.
