My dog has silica stones. Is it from chewing palm trees or his food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 105 lbs

my two and a half year old mixed dog had a surgery on november to get silica stones removed from his bladder. Could this be related to his awful habit of chewing on the trunk of the palm trees? i´ve been reading their trunk is high in silica content. I´ve been feeding him with Alpo Home Style recipes from Purina like my other 3 dogs and they haven´t had any issues with this food, only him. So i was wondering if it was the food or chewing on the trunk of these trees.

Hi there and good morning! Thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is possible the stone formation may be linked to the ingestion of palm tree trunk, but from my knowledge Silica stones are more directly linked to between formation of these stones and plant derived ingredients in the food, such as soy and corn, which appears to be high in Alpo Dog Food. However, it is also possible these may be related to the palm eating as well if the palms Jack is nibbling on are high in silicates. Hope this helps and thanks again for posting!
