Getting two dogs: Will they bond with each other more than me?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | 15 lbs

I am considering getting a dog for my family. But, there will be no one at home for at least 7 hours 5 days a week. However, we are wondering if it would be okay to get another dog so they can keep each other company. We know that they like human company, but is company from other dogs okay too? Also, if we go along this route, do should we worry about the dogs bonding to each other and not to us? It is very important that the dogs have a good relationship with us too.

I never like to get two dogs at the same time as you are correct that they will bond with each other more than the people in the family. I would start with one, get them settled in and trained, then after six months to a year you can consider getting the first dog a companion. Dogs do enjoy companionship but they also love being with people. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
