My dog gave birth days ago. What if a dead puppy is still inside her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My dog just gave birth on Thursday today is Sunday when she went outside to use the restroom we noticed there were paws hanging Out of her we proceeded to extract the puppy by the legs and it came with the after birth, of course it was dead at this point. So my question is what do I do, should I worry there is another, is there anything left in her, she has given no indication of pain or anything just tired and doesn't really seem happy but not sad either. I just need to know what to do.

Poor Abby! Yes, I would definitely be concerned. It is very abnormal for there to still be a puppy left inside her after all this time, so it’s clear that things did not go properly when she was in labor. I would be very concerned that there could be more dead pups inside her, or that she could develop a serious uterine infection from this. I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet today for an exam. The doctor there can take x-rays and ultrasound her uterus to check for additional puppies, and can also start her on antibiotics or other treatment if needed depending on what is found.
