Why is my healthy dog suddenly not running? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 3 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs

My young sled dog is no longer willing to run even though Shadow appears completely healthy. He is able to jump and walk but when we go for walks he can’t run. He doesn’t appear to have any injury and our Vet found him to be healthy when doing a physical without blood work. He has a strange pigmentaion on his pupils as you can see in the third picture. He is upset today because his dog team left without him. I take him for walks and he will only run for a very short distance and then walks.

Poor Shadow! I recommend taking him back into the vet for further testing. It's interesting and certainly not normal that a young dog doesn't want to or seems unable to run. A physical exam isn't enough to rule things out, so I recommend further testing such as x-rays of his back, hips, and hind limbs, and possibly x-rays of his chest. It could be a musculoskeletal problem preventing him from running, or it could be something wrong with his heart. The x-ray of his chest will visualize his heart and lungs. Blood work would be a good idea as well. Depending on the results of these tests, the vet may recommend further testing such as an echocardiogram if they suspect something wrong with his heart, or may be able to have a diagnosis and can discuss treatment options with you. I recommend taking him into a vet again this week. Good luck, I hope this helps!
