Why does my dog smack her lips when resting? Is it a concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My dog is always smacking her lips. It occurs normally when she’s lying down or sitting, but not when she’s active, on walks or when playing etc. She has a good appetite, drinks water, poop and pee is normal. Is the lip smacking something I should be concerned about ?

This sign could be quite generic and could be compatible commonly with teeth problems or nausea (related to gastrointestinal inflammation/infections), but it is not uncommon even in normal dogs. In Puffina case I would just monitor her should the signs be persistent or getting worse or should you notice any gastrointestinal sign as vomiting or diarrhoea.
