My dog is clingy and destructive when alone. Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 12 lbs

So my dog is a years old and 3 months, he’s very attached to me. He is a bit destructive when I’m not home. And he follows me everywhere. He always wants to be by my side. I think it’s adorable but I’m also worried because I have read about separation anxiety. What can I do? Is it ok for him to be way to attached to me?

This does sound like Rexxy has some separation anxiety. Some things that you can do to help him are to make sure he gets plenty of exercise, especially before you have to leave for an extended period of time; put him in a crate/kennel before you leave to prevent him from being destructive while you are away; and you may want to consider talking to your vet about medication for anxiety. This may help his transition and make him be more calm in your absence. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck!
