How to help a 4-week-old puppy scared of handling and new places?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 55 lbs

My dog had pups 4 weeks ago they all seem to be good, except for one who always gets scared when you pick him up or put him or put him in a different environment, his claws go out and he just freezes. None of the others do this, how can I help him?

You have to desensitize him to different touches and environment. Everything is new and that can be scary. The best thing to do is keep handling him and rubbing him to get him used to getting touch and picked up. Once he is comfortable with that, then you can start moving him to different places while holding him securely so he feels safe. It may help to always have a litter mate next to him so he realizes they are not scared or panicked also
