Why is my cat itching, losing hair, and has brown skin spots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 8 lbs

My 5 year old ragdoll cat has always been a lightweight. About 3 months ago she started losing hair starting on her belly and now her legs. gradually moving. She has also been itching & breaking the skin creating scabs on her shoulders & hips. We cannot see anything on her & have treated her for fleas & mites including shampoos. Now her bare nipples are brown & has scattered brown freckling over portions of her belly. Any idea what may be going on?

It sounds like Zoey may have a skin infection. This could be bacterial, fungal, or a combination of the two. It is possible that something such as food allergies or environmental allergies may have predisposed her to the infection. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

This can be a sign of thyroid disease or parasites like fleas. Even though Zoe doesn’t seem to be overgrooming allergies are still a possibility as well. I would recommend having your vet examine Zoe’s skin. Blood work might be recommended.
