Can I use human artificial tears for my dog's green eye discharge?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 26.6 lbs

Asked about my dogs eye a few minutes ago. Was told to use artificial tears and watch for squinting or her scratching at the eye. She has green discharge and bloodshot eye. Just wanted a second opinion and to know if human artificial tears are ok and how much/how often to administer them?

Hello again. Yes, human artificial tears are fine, that is what I use in the office. You can place a few drops into the eye every hour, or every few hours. It totally depends on your schedule. I would want to instill the drops at least 3-4 times a day. You can not over apply. Any concerns, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible.
