Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 20 days old | 6.5 lbs
We currently feed our puppy (5.5 months) Hollistic Health Extension food because it’s what she ate when we got her and she seems to like it. It’s for all life stages. I know this is ok for puppies but is it really ok for older dogs? Don’t want to overload w nutrients or something.

If your puppy is doing well on this food, I would certainly recommend not switching at this point. If you are concerned about the calorie content for your adult dog, you can calculate her testing energy requirement (body weight in Kg times 30 plus 70) and then divide by the number of kCals per cup of the food to determine how much you should be feeding.

The nutrition requirements of pups and adults are quite different, with growing pups needing a different mineral /calciu m balance and higher levels of protein than an adult would require. I strongly recommend you check with your vets office or supplier/manufacturer to be sure she is currently receiving everything she needs for growth and if they have an appropriate adult range to convert to once fully grown

Adult dogs and puppies (under 12 months) have different nutritional requirements. You should be feeding Terry a good quality puppy food and the other dog a good quality adult diet. You can transition the pup to an adult diet at 12 months of age. Feeding a puppy diet to an adult dog may predispose it to obesity.

There should be an AAFCO statement on your dog food bag indicating who the food is made for. As long as it states “formulated for all life stages “ then it is fine to feed to the puppy. If it says something else such as for adult maintenance, then you may want to seek out an all life stages food that can be fed to both. Best of luck and Thank you for using Pet Coach.
