Why isn't my dog's corneal ulcer healing? What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 17 lbs

Is there an over the counter/oral medication that could treat corneal ulcer in dogs? My vet just prescribed tobramycin eyedropa. But can't use it indefinitely. I see no improvement.

I’m sorry to hear about Sky! There is no over the counter drop/ointment that I am aware of. Reasons the eye may not be healing: 1) If you have not put Sky in an E-collar, do so right away. This is one of the most common reasons they will not heal because the dog will rub and scratch at the eye. Can order online or find at a vet or pet shop. 2) it may not be healing is if Sky has an underlying condition such as dry eye. 3) Sky needs an additional or different medication. 4) we need to increase treatments from twice a day to three or four times a day. Call your vet and let them know what’s going on so they can make a suggestion about what to try next.
