My dog is overweight despite diet, walks, and vet visits. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered

My parents have an overweight 5 year old crossbreed. The dog has at least 2 long walks a day but us still overweight. They have taken him to the vet numerous times & advice has been varied, one vet thought that the dog was at optimum weight - he clearly is not. He has no waste line anymore & his legs look much shorter than they did! They have reduced his food intake & have reduced his treats. They have now started giving carrot sticks instead of normal treats. Is there anything else they can do?

You are definitely doing a big favour by reducing Barney's weight till an optimum weight. I do recommend to contact your local vet branch, most of them run a weight clinic and they can follow Barney throughout his diet. Those clinics are usually for free (but ask them a quote before enrolling just in case it isn't!). I also recommend a prescription diet (hill's or royal canin) called obesity or, even better, a diet called metabolic. Please ask you vet or vet nurse how you can get this food nearby your house; most of the time they can order it for you!
