How often should I clean my bird's cage and change its bedding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 3 days old

Hi. My name is, Chase. Last week I got my first bird, a 5 month old blue budgie named Henry. I have googled mostly what to do until now. I went to my local vet. But they said that they don't know a single thing about birds. And I live in the middle of nowhere. The next vet is an hour drive. So I figured asking online about the basics would be best. Like, how often should I change his bedding, and what should I clean his cage with, basic stuff like that. Thankyou, - Chase.

Hi Chase! It sounds like Henry is off to a good start with a very caring owner. Bedding changes depend greatly on what you are using, however newspaper/paper towels should be replaced daily, and the cage itself should be wiped down weekly or if you see any build up of fecal matter. Most pet stores will carry bird cage cleaners that help break down stuck-on fecal matter and make it easy to clean. You can also use a weak soap solution as long as you rinse it well after, or even just hot water and a little elbow grease to keep the cage clean if Henry is otherwise healthy and doing well.
