My dog threw up red spots. Is it blood? What could be the reason?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 80 lbs

My dog just threw up and it had little red spots in it that looked a lot like blood to me. I’m very worried and I don’t know what could possibly cause this, has anyone seen this before?

It definitely can be a little bit of blood but I wonder if any of the treats or food he recently ate was red or had red pieces in it. If not then I recommend taking him to a veterinarian to get hydrated and make sure he gets stomach protectants with his medication. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Dogs often vomit after foreign body ingestion but not often vomitus containing blood. When we see red or brown spots in vomitus, it is concerning for a gastric ulcer. You should have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian and discuss abdominal x-rays.
