My dog is losing weight and sick. Vet suspects poisoning. Will he recover?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old

A belgian shepherd (malinois) has been losing weight and not feeling himself for over a month. He was taken for blood and urine tests and the results are high ALB, ALT, AMYL, UREA, PHOS, TP, ALB, and low CHOL,LIPA,CA, The vet said he has been poisoned or intoxicated. Please clarify this and please tell me if the dog will recover. This sounds very serious. Thank you.

I’m sorry max has not been feeling well recently. Without seeing the full blood work and the specific values it is really hard to interpret the results. But the ALT is a liver value that will increase with many toxicities (plants, molds, xylitol for example). You are right that liver toxicities are very serious. But, Depending on the toxin and just how high the value is, max definitely could recover with supportive care from your veterinarian.
