My kitten eats too fast when alone. How can I control her food?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 25 days old | 4 lbs

I am planning on going on a trip for the whole day tomorrow. I am planning on leaving my 6 month old kitty by herself with a whole bowl of food and water. The problem is that she doesn't know how to stop eating! She will eat the whole bowl if i left it for her. Can someone please give me some tips on what I can do?

Do you have time to run out to a pet store and get a timed feeding bowl? This will release a specific amount of food at set times, and will keep Nala from overeating. You can also put her food into a muffin tin, dividing it equally among the 12 tins. This will also force her to slow down eating and may allow her to get full quicker. Check to see if you can get the timed feeding bowl first. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I would try to teach everyone to meal feed. this would mean you place everyone’s food bowl down at the same time for 30 minutes. I would put them if different areas of the house if possible. Once that time is up, the food gets picked up. If you have to add canned food to the smaller cats’ food to help entice them to eat and prevent weight loss, that’s ok. This would also allow you to feed Clover a set amount and prevent obesity. Unfortunately, this is the best solution. There isn’t a great way to prevent him from eating too much when it is always available. You can also encourage him to increase his activity by making him play more. I hope this helps.

If Nuzzle is getting fat then I switch to 100% canned food. The canned food is all meat and has a high protein and fat content so they are not as hungry. Dry food has lots of carbohydrates which makes cats fat. Also I add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding to add fiber to his diet and keep him from being hungry. Increasing his exercise with climbing a cat tree, playing with a laser light or chasing a toy on a string will help burn excess calories and improve his fitness. Indoor cats in particular tend to get heavy and it puts them at risk for diabetes, heart discease and arthritis. I'm glad you are addressing this when he's still young. Feeding our pets is often a tough love situation. Many cats simply do not stop eating when they have consumed a sufficient amount of food, so it is up to us to only provide them with proper portions. Since Obe has not lost weight, he is consuming an appropriate amount of food. However, there are some ways that you can try to slow down his pace of eating. Try spreading his wet food over a large surface area (such as a baking sheet) or put small amounts of his wet food into different sections of a muffin tin so that he has to work for his food more. Other puzzle toys (here are some ideas for homemade ones: https://www.purina.com/articles/cat/feeding/diy-cat-puzzle-feeder) can be useful in feeding wet food, just as they are for dry food. At this point, it doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about, but it may make everyone's life easier if you can slow down Obe's pace of eating with one of these ideas. I hope this helps!

He could adjust with time, however if he doesn't there are RFID feeders that have a chip that attaches to your cat's collar, and only lets that cat into the feeder. You may want to use this on your older cat who grazes so that she can get to her food as needed, while the kitten can't, and keep to his stricter feeding schedule.

For my other cat Luna, as soon as her food opens (automatic feeder) she finishes it all right away, but for Mina she only eats a bit at a time and takes almost the whole day to finish it. Right now their food is in different rooms and I monitor them
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is difficult to change a cat’s eating preferences; there are a couple of options to try, however. There are automatic feeders that are triggered to be open by a specific tag on the collar; this way, Mina could come and go as she pleases and only her collar would open the feeder. Another option, if she likes wet food, is to feed her a larger portion of wet food that she will eat right away. If these options don’t work, I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian for more options. Good luck!

I have a couple of suggestions for you. First, one of my friends used a latch to create an opening in their laundry room door that only the skinny cat could fit through. They left food in there for the skinnier cat to free feed throughout the day and meal fed the heavier cat. Second, if your skinnier cat will eat from food balls or no-bowl feeders, I would feed all meals in that way. Third, I would only feed twice the amount of food that the heavier cats needs twice daily. That way the skinnier cat has enough to eat, but there isn't enough extra for Luna to eat. The skinnier cats tend to get this concept after a couple of days and eat more at a meal instead of grazing as much. Finally, you could consider changing to or adding a canned food meal. That may help the skinnier cat eat a "meal" instead of grazing. Canned food is less "addicting" and less fattening than dry food, so it might be beneficial for both cats. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! There are a few things that you can consider including splitting her feedings into a few a day using the slow feeder. You can look into getting a different slow feeder. Also, you can consider basically throwing her food (kibble) in a room which is going to spread it out and Jackie will have to eat it more slowly. It could be that Tiger ate his food too fast, leading him to choke a bit on it. To keep him from eating too quickly, I would portion out his food, giving him more of it after he eats a small amount. You could also put his food in a muffin tin, putting equal portions in each of the 12 tins. That will slow down his eating. I hope this helps!

Is there an easy way to feed multiple cats? How do I keep one cat from eating the others' food?
This can be a challenging situation, especially if you have one cat that's more of an "eater" than the others. I would try to offer canned food for one meal, and dry for another. For the canned meal, you can put it out into separate bowls, ensure that everyone has their own bowl, and monitor the situation until they finish. Most cats will go ahead and finish a portion of canned food, unlike dry, which they will often "snack" on. You can also reinforce the "ownership" of each cat's bowl by calling them, and then feeding that cat only in that bowl (and consequentially, in that space) at all times. That way, you're teaching them that they will get fed at "their" bowl at all times. Interlopers onto other bowls should be discouraged and redirected back to their own bowl.
