Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years and 9 months old

our 6 year old golden retriever has just completed a series of k9 advantix 2 for killing flees - once a week x3 I have noticed now 3 weeks past that time that she is shedding more, her skin on her back is grey colored and she is chewing shoe laces (not leather) and some our clothes and socks - then vomits. she is eating well and pooping, playful with her ball. any idea? she is otherwise acting normal

Advantix and other flea medications can occasionally cause hair loss where the medication was applied, but shouldn't change skin color or cause shedding. She may have dry skin due to the environment, her food, or allergies. Many dogs like to eat fabric and it's generally behavioral and not related to a medical condition. Some dogs eat non food items due to nutritional deficiencies but things like dirt and rocks are more likely than fabric. If she continues to vomit I'd recommend taking her to your veterinarian for an exam. X-rays might be recommended to make sure she doesn't have fabric in her stomach.
